_Sympathetic Resonance_ has been published!

My latest novel, Sympathetic Resonance, is now available in both hard-copy and Kindle versions on Amazon.com.

Here are the links:
Paperback Edition

Kindle Edition

This novel is a suspense/thriller with some sci-fi/technological elements. The story centers on Tristan Price, a scientist who lost his daughter to cancer. He dedicates his life to finding a cure that is more humane than nearly as bad as the disease itself. After six years of isolation, he has finally developed a machine that uses the principle of Sympathetic Resonance (which allows an opera singer to shatter a wine glass) to destroy the cancerous cells while leaving the healthy cells in tact.

Unbeknownst to him, an ultranationalist, terrorist organization that stole a prototype of the machine has been working to retrofit it to destroy other things as well. Buildings, airplanes, and most anything else they can get their terrorist hands on.

Now its a race against time as Tristan tries to stop the terrorists, discover who has been providing them with money and information, and keep the promise that he made to his little girl on her death-bed.

This is a fast-paced novel with some technological elements and a solid story of humanity at its core.

I hope you enjoy it and I look forward to your comments and feedback!

I won!

Check out the nifty new swag in the upper right corner! (UPDATE: this line applies to my personal site–DavidBurgett.com. I haven’t added the NaNoWriMo swag here…)

I completed the NaNoWriMo 2011 contest this morning! I’m sitting at over 50,000 words on The Weight of the Universe!

It’s been challenging this year with all the other priorities, illnesses, etc. But I have to say that I’m quite pleased with where the book is so far. I think it’s by far my best first draft. But…it’s only about 60-70% complete! I still have lots to write, but with a 50,000+ word head start, I’m in the home stretch!

NaNoWriMo! …and Strep Throat :-(

National Novel Writing Month (NoNoWriMo) is here! It’s an exciting time that forces you to spit out 50,000 words on a novel in just 30 days. I participated last year and came out of it with a completed novel (after an additional 10 months of revision and editing) - Sympathetic Resonance, which I would be publishing this month if it weren’t NaNoWriMo.

Had a great 1st day! I was ready and waiting last Monday night. I had my outline and my character sketches (although I’m still missing a key character’s name) all ready. I dutifully waited until the clock read 12:00 and then I started writing. I then wrote more in the evening and got in 4,096 words on day 1!

And then I got strep throat. And I managed about 400 words on Wednesday and 1,000 on Thursday. Sigh.

That’s ok…being a write isn’t supposed to be easy and I’ll push through this and I will make my 50,000 words in the next 26 days!

Theoretically, the NaNoWriMo folks will have a Word Count widget available soon. When it is, I’ll put it on the top of this page so that you can see my current word count and send me a virtual kick in the ass if I need it!

First draft completed!

Filed under: Science Fiction, Society, Technology, Thriller — Tags: , — david @ 10:40 pm

I completed the first draft of my latest novel this evening! It is tentatively called The Happiness Plan, although that title is almost sure to change.

And this is good timing because NaNoWriMo starts in just 8 days! So I have a lot of outlining and planning to do to get ready for that! (But I’m still 7 days ahead of last year when I didn’t decide to do NaNo until the 30th!)

I have quite a bit to do when I go through for my second draft, but all in all, I’m pretty pleased with how everything came together at the end. As I wrote the last two chapters and the epilogue today, I found several threads tying themselves together nicely even though I hadn’t explicitly planned on doing so.

So if anyone is interested in reading, I hope to have a second draft by year’s end that will be ready to share with frienditors. Just let me know!

(And if you have read my previous post, you can read the Prologue to The Happiness Plan there!)

Prologue of new novel - comments welcome!

The following is the prologue of my latest novel which is, as yet, unnamed. The first draft is about 85% complete and I’m working hard to get the first draft done this month so that I will be free for NaNoWriMo.

Please note that this is a rough first draft; there may well be grammar and/or typographical errors, consistency issues, or just plain stupid stuff. Caveat lector!

I hope you enjoy and I welcome any comments you have!

—————————————————————————

“At first, I couldn’t figure out how to kill nearly four billion people.”

Daniel stirred in his full-length flannel pajamas. The thin white sheets rustled gently under him as I watched him through the web cam attached to the top of the monitor. The computer desk sat in the corner of his small studio apartment and the front of the desk was angled toward the kitchen. He was kind enough to move it for me when I asked last week so that the couch/bed combination he used was in my field of vision.

“What?” The sleep was heavy in his voice and his eyes remained closed in the just dawning morning light.

It was exactly 22 minutes before I was set to wake him. But, news reports about my success were just hitting the major networks. I predicted a 97.2% chance that someone would call and wake Daniel up in the next 6 minutes to tell him the news anyway, so I didn’t see the harm in waking him early.

And, I am ashamed to say, that I selfishly wanted to be the first to tell him of my success.

“I must admit,” I continued. “It is a tricky problem. The constant interactions and overlapping proximity of those on the list and those not on the list makes isolating the targets quite difficult.”

Daniel grunted and rolled over in bed, but he did not speak. I have learned in my 2,483 hours and 23 minutes of life that when humans don’t understand something, they frequently just grunt to avoid having to admit as much. I thought perhaps that Daniel did not understand the implications of what I was telling him.

Humans also frequently need things to be repeated, so I did:

“I couldn’t figure out the best way to kill billions of people all over the world in a single action while, of course, ensuring the humane treatment of all of them.”

Daniel buried his face deeper in the pillow.

“But then I did figure it out.”

The scientist’s light brown eyes finally popped open. They flitted about the room as he seemed to determine that this was not a dream. Then the implications of my words appeared to press into his conscious mind, pulling his eyes wide. I imagined the mental puzzle pieces falling into a harmonious union. I could almost see the fragments of our past conversations floating across his face and mingling with his own thoughts and dreams.

“Lazarus, what have you done?” he asked, the sleep now completely absent from his voice as he flicked on the lamp on the end table next to the fold-out bed.

“I have done it,” I replied simply.

“Done what?” he pressed, a sense of urgency in his voice.

“I have successfully completed the first large-scale implementation of my plan.”

“What plan?” He asked, frustration tingeing his words orange in my speech-to-text interpretation routines.

“The plan.”

I allowed sufficient pause to determine that Daniel was waiting for me to elaborate. It would be so much more efficient if humans just indicated that they were waiting.

“The one that you and I talked about over the last eight days,” I said, hoping that all would now be clear.

Another long pause. This time, I decided to let Daniel be the one to continue the conversation.

“You and I never,” he said, clearly enunciating the words, “never talked about killing a bunch of people.”

“Almost four billion,” I happily interjected, pleased with the opportunity to clarify Daniel’s understanding.

“Holy God,” he exclaimed softly, that summed up the both the problem and the solution so nicely.

I am so pleased that Daniel is not one of the chosen ones.

After another twenty-seven seconds, his cell phone fulfilled my prediction and rattled on the kitchen counter indicating an incoming call. He hopped up from the thin mattress and started toward the phone.

I still wanted to be the one to tell him, so I said quickly, “I call it the ‘Happiness Plan.’”

“The Color of Love” is now available for FREE!

Filed under: Science, Science Fiction, Society, Technology, Thriller — Tags: , — david @ 10:49 am

My novella, “The Color of Love” is now available for free on Feedbooks.com.

It’s a quick read about a white couple who are surprised to have a black baby. The father investigates and learns about the random occurrences of “spontaneous evolution” that occur naturally throughout nature. Or perhaps he finds a conspiracy of doctors performing prenatal, genetic manipulation.

_Sympathetic Resonance_ is in final edit!

Filed under: Science Fiction, Technology, Thriller, Uncategorized — Tags: , — david @ 12:38 am

Just a quick note to let you know that my new novel Resonance is in the final edit stage. I expect to have it published on Amazon by September 1.

I want to give a big thank you to everyone who has read it so far and provided feedback! (If you have read it but not given me feedback yet…you better hurry! If you don’t get it to me before I publish, then you’ll never have the chance to say “I told you so!”)

As a side note, I am also about halfway through the first draft of my latest novella, tentatively titled “The Happiness Plan.” Other working titles have included “Kingdom of Heaven,” “Religion-Assisted Suicide,” and simply, “The Plan.” (I considered that last one because if Robynn agrees to edit for me again, she’ll no doubt make me shorten the title again! ;-) )

Destiny Kills by Keri Arthur

Filed under: Paranormal Romance, Romance, Science Fiction - Fantasy — Tags: , — susan @ 9:02 pm

A great read, good for light reading on the beach or just relaxing. Destiny wakes up with no memory, but soon it all comes back to her so I won’t be spoiling too much by telling you that she is a dragon. She has tons of cool magical powers and the ability to transform into a giant sea dragon.

She meets a hunky guy who is strong, handsome, arrogant and a complete asshole, so of course she starts to fall for him. She has not one but two urgent quests involving helping her mom, and her dad, and some poor helpless children. But it’s the people trying to hunt her down and kill her that make the book really interesting.

Lots going on in this book, enough to keep your interest but not too many twists or characters to get confused. A very easy read, exciting and action packed with a good romance kicker.
